The Government Film & Television Institute, Bangalore (formerly a part of S.J.Polytechnic) is believed as the first government institute in India to start technical courses related to films. It is one of the few government film institutes in India. The institute is located at Hesaraghatta, Bengaluru in Karnataka. It comes under the Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Karnataka. The institute offers three-year diploma courses in Cinematography and Sound Recording and Engineering. In August 1943,S.J.Occupational Institute named after the then Maharaja of Mysore, was started by Sir M.Visveswaraya to give training to Technicians in specialized subjects like Ceramics, Instrument technology Boilers and Engines Welding and Sheet Metal, Cinematography, Sound Engg, Radio Engg. It was a Unique Institute, the first of its kind in the country.
